The Black Madonna of Częstochowa paint isthe most recognizable symbols of Christianity

The Black Madonna is a painting depicting the Virgin Mary with the Infant Jesus. This work is surrounded by a particular religious cult among the faithful of the Roman Catholic Church and the Orthodox Church. Today is one of the most recognizable symbols of Christianity in Poland. The exact origin of the picture and the date of its founding is unknown. It is believed that the icons creation date falls on the 1st century as a one of 70 icons painted by St. Luke on the fragment of Holy Family's dining table. After centuries of traveling around the world, in the second half of the 12th century, the painting came to the Rus's castle in Bełz, which in the 1372 was annexed to the The Kingdom of Poland.

With the icon there are connected lots of wonders and miracles. First was recorded just after the Black Madonna's arrival to Poland - according to the chronicles when the Tatars attacked Bełza one of them shot the icon with an arrow and the Blessed Virgin had started bleeding which traces can be seen even today.

At last the Black Madonna has been moved to the Częstochowa in the 1382 after the Opole's prince Władysław's dream in which Our Lady ordered him to do it and thanks to this today we have an unique opportunity to watch the miraculous icon in the magnificent and nostalgic atmosphere of the Jasna Góra Monastery.
